ONLY ONE WAY TO END

There was only one way Martine was able to get away from her trama and sorrows. The only ways she was able to escape was to take the ultimate escape, death. She moved from Haiti to the United States, yet still she was not able to accomplish an safe-heaven for herself. She tried to confront her rapist indirectly by facing Sophia yet still she was not able to overcome. Things only became only worse with her nightmares haunting her everynight. Martine was not able to outrun the past or even hide from it. Martine's life binded to the tramatic event, she was never able to suppress the horrible events. It is interesting how before dieing Martine says she could not carry the baby. This raises the question, if Martine had done a abortion with Sophia would she have been able to overcome the horrific event overtime or would it have been the same. Sophia to Martine was a constant reminder of the rape, maybe if the the reminder was not there she would have been able to BREATH !

  1. I agree with this comment. I feel that by Martine having Sophie, she basically relived her rape time and time again. She ran from Haiti to get away from her own daughter. This does show that Martine was not ok with having Sophie. This time around when she is having a baby with Marc, a man she loves, she still feels like a part of the rapist is in her. Since Martine never fully analyzed what happened to her, it affects all aspects of her present life. The fact that she is stabs her stomach seventeen times in order to get rid of the baby is like her fighting off the rapist. She sees her rapist everywhere and for her to be carrying this baby is unimaginable. And yes if she did get rid of Sophie successfully in her attempts to have a ‘natural’ abortion, she may have been able to get on with her life. She may have lived a somewhat normal life where she would have been able to have this baby not out of rape but love.

  2. I agree with Harjit that Martine’s was constantly reminded of her rape by Sophie’s face, but her trauma was deeper than just beginning reminded by her daughter. After Sophie left to marry Joseph, Martine’s boyfriend Marc took over Sophie’s situation of waking up her up when she had nightmares. This shows that even though Sophie was not their as a reminder; she still could not escape the memories of her past. The situation just worsened when she became pregnant and began hearing voices. The reason for the horrible way Martine died and her attempts at aborting Sophie did show that pregnancy was really too much for her to bear; but I am not sure that if she was able to avoid getting pregnant or have Sophie she could make peace with her past. Martine tried working in a different town and then moved to America, but still could not move far enough away to escape her past.

  3. I also agree that Sophie is Martine's reminder of her rape. When she gets pregnant again, it reminds her of her rape. In addition, even now she does not feel comfortable having sexual intercourse with her boyfriend since she is scared due to her rape. I think she regrets not having had Sophie aborted as a teenager, and thus tries to kill her baby by stabbing her stomach. Martine's second pregnancy makes her not being able to handle the stress and thus takes her life.
